The Buddhist Society of India, also known as the Bharatiya Bauddha Mahasabha, stands as a national beacon of Buddhism’s resurgence in India. Founded on the 4th of May, 1955, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, this organization owes its existence to the visionary leadership of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. 
The Buddhist Society of India id registered under the Indian Societies Registration Act, 1860 with Registration No. 3227. Later, as per the requirements it was also registered under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950 (now Maharashtra Public Trust Act, 1950) vide Registration No. F-982 (Bom) dated 06th July, 1977.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, widely revered as the father of the Indian Constitution, was not only a polymath and human rights activist but also a passionate revivalist of Buddhism in India. He assumed the role of the first National President of the organization.

In a historic ceremony on the 8th of May, 1955, at Nare Park, Bombay (now Mumbai), Dr. Ambedkar officially declared the establishment of the Buddhist Society of India with the noble intention of propagating the teachings of Buddhism across the nation.

Headquartered in the vibrant city of Mumbai, the Buddhist Society of India continues to uphold its mission under the esteemed leadership of Meeratai Yashwant Ambedkar, the daughter-in-law of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who serves as the National President. Bhimrao Yashwant Ambedkar holds the esteemed position of Working President, ensuring the organization’s continued dedication to its noble cause.

With deep reverence for Buddhism’s profound wisdom and Dr. Ambedkar’s commitment to social justice, the Buddhist Society of India remains steadfast in its pursuit of spreading the light of Buddhism and fostering equality and compassion throughout the country.
